With Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D scheduled to come back next month, I thought I’d attempt to convince you to watch the first season in preparation. As a big fan of everything Marvel I had mixed feelings before the first season aired, but I quickly fell in love with the show.
The show follows Agent Phil Coulson, after the battle of New York, as he puts together a team of S.H.I.E.L.D agents to handle Earth-threatening cases. Spoiler alert: he ain’t dead.
Agent Coulson, as played by Clark Gregg, is a Captain America-lovin’, badass S.H.I.E.L.D agent who discovers that his past is not what it seems. Coulson believes that he was brought back to life after having been killed by Loki in New York. After being revived, Coulson is sent to recover in Tahiti. Apparently it’s “a magical place”; perhaps more “magical” than anticipated.
Next in the team is Coulson’s number 2: Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen). Not only is she a pilot and a weapons expert but she’s also a insanely good with just her fists, and her legs, and her entire body… HOW DOES SHE MOVE LIKE THAT!? We find out in the first season that she has been keeping a really big, crucial, secret from Coulson. You’ll just have to watch to find out what it is.
No team is complete without a no-nonsense manly man. That position is filled by Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), a black ops specialist. His story line is perhaps one of the most kick-you-in-the-crotch exciting plots, because, as with all Marvel characters, Ward has a closet full of skeletons, and oh boy it’s a big closet.
Next is the science duo that is Fitz-Simmons. Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), who specialises in weapons technology, and Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), a life science specialist, form the science part of the team. They start off as naïve agents looking for some adventure, but they soon become an essential part of the team. One, adorable, but essential part.
Lastly, in our team of badass agents is Skye (Chloe Bennet): a computer hacker who isn’t actually an agent… well, not when she starts. Before she joins Coulson’s team she was a member of “the Rising Tide”, a hacktivist group dedicated to exposing the existence of humans with super abilities. Skye’s story line revolves around her quest to find the truth about her parents, and, of course, her past isn’t as straightforward as she hoped it would be.
Because there are so many main characters it can be difficult to divide the time equally between the story lines. But Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has successfully found the right balance. The story lines fit perfectly with each other, and with the overall Marvel plots. The show directly follows The Avengers, but also incorporates the story lines from Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
This show not only successfully combines the story lines of the marvel universe but also has some very special guest stars, *cough, cough* Stan Lee, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders and Jaimie Alexander.
The incredible casting and the intense cliffhangers make me very excited for season 2. I can’t recommend this show enough, to both fans of Marvel and fans of television.
