Spiderman gets actor and director, Hannibal gets cancelled and the PS4 gets a 1TB edition.

Film

Independence Day 2 now has a full title; Independence Day Resurgence. The film will be set 20 years after the events of the first film and feature some returning characters as well as a few new faces; most of who are connected to the original cast in some way, check out some images here.

A new trailer for 7 Days in Hell the tennis mockumentary starring Kit Harington and Andy Samberg is out, it shows off a bit more of the characters as well as some more of the cameos and bit characters we’re likely to see. It looks silly and fun and I can’t wait.

Spiderman has finally been cast! Tom Holland, of Impossible and the upcoming In the Heart of the Sea, has been cast as the wall crawler, most likely to appear for the first time in some capacity in Captain America Civil War, and definitely due to appear in the 2017 Spiderman reboot that will be directed by Cop Car director Jon Watts.

Television

Bad news for Hannibal fans, after 3 years the show is being cancelled by NBC. Despite being popular the show has suffered with low ratings, especially in the most recent season.

A new teaser for Heroes Reborn shows us very little of the expansive cast or effects we came to expect from the original, but it does a good job in portraying a world without saviours, a world, perhaps, in need of a new group of heroes.

Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp: the spin off series of the cult film that’s due to air on Netflix at the end of July, has a new, incredibly retro, trailer which confirms what we thought; this show will not take itself particularly seriously, which is great,

Games

Those of you who were looking to get a PS4 but haven’t quite gotten around to it, may want to take a look at the new 1TB PS4. Offering twice the amount of storage as the vanilla console, this ‘Ultimate player edition’ will be available in select Europeanand PAL  territories come July 15th.

After a slew of delays, Project Cars was finally released in May. Well, good news: We won’t have to wait so long before the next one, as Project Cars 2 is already being crowd-funded. And people aren’t too thrilled about the time scale.

Martin Freeman cast in Marvel’s Civil War, Spiderman’s directorial short list and the return of Tony Hawk ProSkater!

Film

Mr. Holmes the newest take on the world’s greatest detective (No, not Batman, that dude with the pipe) which stars Ian McKellen as an ageing Sherlock Holmes who spends the autumn of his years learning about bees and trying to solve his last unsolved case, has a new trailer. This one mentions very little of his waning memory however, which the previous one alluded to heavily.

Martin Freeman has been cast in Captain America Civil War. Now before you start to imagine Bilbo Baggins as a super hero, there’s a pretty high chance that he’ll be cast in a more civilian role, the sort that brings on the superhero registration act that is the story’s main driving force in the comics, his role has not yet been announced, in case you didn’t catch that bunch of conjecture.

A shortlist of directors for the upcoming reboot of Spiderman has been announced, with a decision reportedly to be made at the end of next week. The directors include; Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), Ted Melfi (St. Vincent), Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect), Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) and John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein (Vacation).

Television

Ahead of its release on June 4th Hannibal has three dark character posters, all featuring the man himself, all with the tag line ‘come and get it’. So you know, sounds like a challenge.

Puzzle/point and click game Myst could be getting a Hulu series from Legendary, pending a good reception to the pilot. Producing the series will be Mat Tolmach (The Amazing Spiderman) and Divergent screenwriter Evan Daugherty will be penning the series. The show will most likely be a mystery thriller of sorts, considering the content of the games.

Games

Mirror’s Edge 2 will reboot the franchise for the next generation, according to EA have claimed, they also say that the game is progressing nicely, with a passionate team behind it. Oh, and it’s due out early 2016.

EA also announced a new Need for Speed game to come out later this year, which will be a ‘highly innovative’ game from Ghost Studios. At the same time, a new Plants Vs Zombies game is in the works for the early part of 2016, it will be a bigger, bolder experience according to EA, and there will be more to see at E3.

Tony Hawk Proskater will return, according to this new article from Gameinformer in the guise of Tony Hawk’s ProSkater 5. Which will not only feature the eponymous proskater, but also a host of new maps, game types and… projectile weapons? Have I got two pages stuck together and this is an article about Mario Kart?

Is Captain Marvel already cast? Is there a new Star Wars television series on the way? Will Gambit be in Apocalypse? RUMOURS!

Film

A few casting/cameo rumours this morning. First up is the rumour that, alongside cameos from Storm and Wolverine in Xmen Apocalypse, the next instalment of the Xmen franchise could also see the first look at Channing Tatum’s Gambit, before his feature film in October 2016, now this is a rumour, so it might not be true, but I can’t see why they wouldn’t do it.

For those who missed it yesterday, here’s the full length trailer for Mission :Impossible – Rogue Nation. Starring Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, Alec Baldwin and Rebecca Ferguson.

The last bit of movie rumour-ness is exciting for a few reasons; first of all, it’s been thrown about the internet since Avengers that Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel) could make some sort of appearance in Age of Ultron, but since no-one was cast, and the standalone film was announced for 2018, those talks simmered down. Well now there are rumours (and once again, these are only that) that we could indeed see an un-powered Danvers in Age of Ultron, with a strong likelihood that the role has been cast in absolute secret. Which means Marvel can still surprise us.

Television

More rumours, geez, what is it today? This time on the Star Wars front. There’s a rumour that we could see a live action Star Wars series that will film between the shooting of the feature films, to keep the assets and production values of a similar ilk. They’d help build the Universe and prepare us for the stories to come. But it’s just a rumour.

Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller has released a load of details pertaining to season 3, including directorial announcements and a time-jump mid season to fast forward to the events of red dragon, which will introduce Richard Armitage.

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny will be returning for the 6 episode X-Files run, 20th Century Fox has confirmed. The show will start filming this summer, and a restricted run will allow for some nice, concise story telling, so I’m all about it.

Games

Like Rainbow Six? Well you can now sign up to the closed Beta for Rainbow Six: Siege without pre-ordering the game (instead you go onto a sort of wait-list).

The second piece of DLC for The Evil Within hits consoles on the 21st of April and will follow directly on from the events of the first, check out the trailer here.

The Jaws of Hakkon the first piece of DLC for Dragon Age Inquisition is officially out now for Xbox One and PC, still no date on the PS4 release though, expect it in the coming weeks. Also, trailer. Right here.

Independence Day 2 casting news, Zachary Quinto in Hannibal season 3 and Third Person Alien Isolation.

Film

Will Smith won’t be returning for Independence Day 2, but Jeff Goldblum will be, he’ll be joined by Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth, who will presumably be taking the place of the lead role. They’ll be joined by Jessie Usher from Survivor’s Remorse in June 2016.

Toy Story 4 is actually happening, despite the near perfect ending of the original trilogy, but it’s not all doom and gloom as Pixar President Jim Morris has said that they’re not focussing on another set of films, instead focussing on a solid, stand alone, separate story which isn’t planned to continue. Yes. This. More of this in big films please.

Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens is set to play the Beast in the upcoming live action adaptation of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, alongside Hermione Watson, I mean Emma Granger I mean Emma Watson. They’ll also be joined by Luke Evans (The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug) who’ll be taking up the role of Gaston.

Television

Agents of SHIELD got their mid season off to a good start this week with ‘Aftershocks’ (check out Joe’s reaction here) and you can check out a promo for the next episode ‘Who You Really Are here, it features the return of Jamie Alexander who plays Lady Sif in the Thor films.

Mike Epps (The Hangover) will star as Uncle Buck in the ABC sit-com based off of the John Candy movie of the same name. The show will see the man-child Uncle Buck learning to grow up as he takes care of his brother’s children.

Zachary Quinto (Heroes, Star Trek) is set to feature in at least one episode the third season of Hannibal, alongside Richard Armitage (The Hobbit, BBC’s Robin Hood) as The Tooth Fairy as seen in Red Dragon.

Games

Alien Isolation got a lot of praise for its tension, immersion and atmosphere, I believe that in part that was because of the immediacy of the first person view, not being able to see anything other than what your character was facing made the game a lot more terrifying, well recently the design lead from Creative Assembly showed off some footage of the game in third person mode, and talked about the 3rd vs 1st debate they had.

The Game Developers Conferenc is this week, and it’s very heavily focussed on the indie scene, so to that end pop over to Kotaku to see all the Indie Game News and releases from the GDC,

Fable Legends will be playable cross platform, that much we know already, but it will also be platform blind, so that Xbox players won’t know if they’re playing with or against someone behind a PC or another console. ‘everyone is just a Fable Legends player, it doesn’t matter’  says engineering lead Raymond Arifianto.

Coffee Time News 30/05/14

Many apologies for the late edition, apparently I can’t be trusted to go back to sleep for just ten more minutes. NEWS. It’s a trailer trifecta in film today as we set you up nicely for the weekend with three new trailers for new films we’ve not yet talked about, and not a superhero in sight.

Film

First up is What If, a romantic comedy with Daniel Radcliffe, who I think I’ve seen in something else I just can’t figure out what. He plays a guy, who meets a girl, falls in love with girl, but is insistent that they can still be friends. According to some film festival critics it skirts the line between being self aware enough to make note of cliches but sometimes falls into the very things it’s commenting on. Which isn’t an uncommon problem in this meta age.

MGM are remaking Stargate with the assistance of Roland Emmerich, who is also working on the Independence Day sequel. Now I never watched Stargate, but I heard some interesting things from old housemates.

Liam Neeson is at it again, he’s on the hunt for kidnappers in TAKEN IRELAND EDITION. I’m kidding, the film’s actually called ‘A Walk Among the Tombstones’ and it looks much more intense and intellectual than his other Taken-esk films.

In other trailery news, Kill the Messenger, an investigative, drug cartel, government conspiracy thriller starring Jeremy Renner has a trailer, and I think on of the best things about this film, besides it’s promising cast, is something Renner states near the end about the media and news, and how the news is only how it’s presented. COOL.

Television

Dragons are cool right? Yeah they are. How to Train your Dragon 2 comes out later this year, but Joe, I hear you say, what’s this doing in television? Well kind sir or madam, it’s because there’s going to be a series on netflix which fills in the five year gap between films! Exciting no?

Brian Fuller has hinted at some information regarding Hannibal season 3, now if you’re not quite up to date with the show, this does include some season 2 spoilers, so you’ve been warned.

Games

Everyone who played it loved the controller, The Gamecube had one of the most ergonomic controllers I’ve ever held, it seemed to mold to your hand like mercury, and now you can have this completely un-exaggerated experience for your WiiU.

The Playstation Plus free games service is changing, and seems to be moving to more of a Games for Gold style system.
